Mary McLeod Bethune Book Scholarship
Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was a prominent African American educator, civil rights activist, and Presidential advisor, making her one of the most influential women of her generation. Dr. Bethune was a champion for African American women’s rights and advancement and worked tirelessly for education equality. In 2009, Dr. Danell Edwards established the Mary McLeod Bethune Book Scholarship to celebrate the life and honor the memory of Dr. Bethune. This scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in Troy University’s elementary education graduate program on the Atlanta, Georgia campus. To be eligible, students must be K-6 educators currently employed by a U.S. public or private school; Troy University employees are not eligible. Applicants are required to submit a written essay of up to 300 words on a topic assigned by the selection committee.
